Rock Doctors 2026
On Thursday 9 July, our best and brightest geoscientists headed to the Wild About Aden Summer Festival at Aden Country Park, recruiting brave families from across Buchan to pick up their field notebooks and kit bags to join us for Rock Doctors!

The action-packed experience saw participants embark on a guided 2.5km trek through geological time, led by an expert "Rock Doctor" working on the Acorn CO2 Transport and Storage Project.
Young recruits travelled through 145 million years of geological history, exploring nine different layers or rock.

Along the way, they faced terrifying creatures, dramatic natural disasters and a host of geological challenges to discover the rocks deep below the North Sea with properties perfect for helping geoscientists meet the urgent global climate challenge.
This immersive educational experience saw Rock Doctor recruits take on many rock-themed experiments.
They were invited to taste test ancient geological slime...

Examine the delicious properties of 115-million-year-old sandstone and a 105-million-year-old shale…

Come face-to-face with terrifying sea creatures...

Battle volcanoes, an ice age and even explore real space rocks!

For those brave enough to complete each milestone challenge, there were special Rock Star rewards waiting when they finally reached the seabed of the Central North Sea.
At the end of their journey, trainee Rock Doctors put all their new geological skills to the test, identifying the sealing and buffer rock layers that sit above the Acorn CO₂ Storage Site.
Once they had successfully completed their mission, they were let loose with hammers and rocks to do what Rock Doctors do best…
