The Scottish Schools Hydrogen Challenge
Acorn and the Scottish cluster supported energy engineering events designed to show young people the potential careers open to them in the hydrogen sector, across the country in late 2022 and early 2023 – reaching an audience of thousands from Inverness to the Borders.
Our experts were involved in the Scottish Schools’ Hydrogen Challenge, which was delivered to more than 4,500 participants from secondary schools in Caithness & Sutherland, Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth & Kinross, Stirling, Edinburgh and Glasgow between October 2022 and March 2023.
Participating schools were given a Lego kit and a small hydrogen fuel cell, with every team member having a role to play in building a hydrogen-powered vehicle, getting it moving and running it efficiently over as great a distance as possible. Every car entered got off the starting line and chalked up many tens of metres of travel – significant results in a very short space of time.
There were nine large-scale finals events, in Inverness, Perth, Dundee, Stirling, Dunfermline, Edinburgh, Glasgow; with the north-east regional and grand finale events held in Aberdeen.
