Celebrating Stem with Stemovators and SSE
28th May 2025
Hundreds of pupils from schools across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire gathered at the University of Aberdeen for this year’s Stemovators Celebration of STEM event — an exciting day of climate‑themed exhibits and hands‑on industry challenges.
Alongside our Scottish Cluster partner SSE, we delivered a carbon capture and storage (CCS) challenge where pupils created CO₂, captured it, and then explored how and where it could be safely stored. The experiment involved plenty of vinegar, chocolate, and enthusiastic teamwork.

A special congratulations to Hazlehead Primary, who captured the most CO₂ out of the 23 teams taking part. We were also incredibly impressed by the exhibits from St Fergus Primary, Pitfour Primary, Alford Primary, and Tipperty School — their creativity and understanding of CCS stood out as we toured the displays at lunchtime.

As the photos show, a huge amount of hard work, imagination, and learning went into every project. It was inspiring to see so many young people engaging with climate science and low‑carbon technologies.
