Celebrating STEM across Scotland
Acorn’s experts shared their knowledge and skills as part of this year’s SCDI and the Young Engineers and Science Clubs Scotland (YESC) Celebration of STEM programme.
The events gave hundreds of young people an insight into how clean and renewable energy will play a vital role in their futures, and an insight into possible career paths into the industry.
The SCDI/YESC Celebration of STEM programme brings primary and secondary schools’ together to complete a series of challenges, with industry volunteers and companies – including Acorn partners Storegga and Shell – each providing a five-minute, hands-on activity focusing on teamwork and problem solving.
Pupils also showcased their entries into the Climate Smarter and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects, with experiments on energy sources, sustainable water use, sustainable materials, energy storage, construction and building operation, and smart technologies.
At the final event in the programme, in Edinburgh our team illustrated the process of how carbon capture and storage is achieved, by guiding participants through a hands-on demonstration using fizzy water and a range of porous – and not so porous – types of rock.
Our teams also helped to evaluate pupils’ projects, with the most innovative ideas winning trophies and sponsorship rewards for their school’s Young Engineers and Science Club at each event.
